Russell Halmeyer

Konkie startte zijn carrière al op twaalfjarige leeftijd op Curaçao in de band The Little Moonlighters onder leiding van Robert Lake in het West End Theater. Zijn grote begaafdheid viel op en twee jaar later ontving hij een vliegticket naar Trinidad, de bakermat van de steelpan. Daar ontdekte hij: 'This is it, for the rest of my life!'.

Konkie Halmeyer combineert Caribische ritmes met soul en blues en is in de jazzwereld een veel gevraagd solist. Met zijn eigen band 'Riba Tera' (Down to Earth) geeft hij concerten in theaters, op congressen, festivals en andere gelegenheden. Daarnaast geeft hij workshops.

In 1972 maakte hij deel uit van de Scorpio Steel Combo, waarvoor hij componeerde en arrangeerde. Enkele jaren later richtte hij met zijn vriend en bassist Sherman van Heydoorn zijn eigen trio Splash Pan op. Zij speelden in hotels en andere gelegenheden op Curaçao, traden op in Venezuela, Santo Domingo, de andere ABC eilanden en op cruisreizen in de Caribische zee. Ook toerde hij met het trio naar Sint Maarten en de Caribische eilanden Barbados, Mont Serat, Les Saints en Guadaloupe.

Konkie nam lessen op de muziekacademie in componeren en arrangeren en begon composities te schrijven, zoekend naar eigen klank en kleur. Hij combineerde Caribische ritmes met Soul en Blues en raakte steeds meer betrokken in de wereld van de jazz. In 1988 schitterde hij met zijn steelpans op het eerste Jazz Festival van Curaçao. Daarna trad hij op met groten in de jazzwereld: Paquito d'Rivera en Monty Alexander. Met Monty Alexander toerde hij door Jamaica en maakte kennis met verschillende Europese landen. In 1993 won hij de KLM JAZZ AWARD. Dit was voor hem het moment om het eiland te verlaten en een carrière te starten in Europa.

In 2004 presenteerde Kas di Kultura Curaçao in de jazzclub Olé Olé te Willemstad de nieuwe CD van Konkie ‘Bari di klabu’. Een zeer bijzonder album omdat Konkie niet alleen zijn nieuwe steelpan, de Queen 3/1 daarin presenteert en laat klinken, maar ook een nieuwe methode van spelen introduceert. Een CD die voor de liefhebbers van de steelpan en de steelpanmuziek onmisbaar is.
